There's really no particular connection to the Apostles in 'Apostolic Succession'--other than the lineage, which can be verified for the most part or at least shown to be a probability.

But does that mean that the faith or teachings of the Apostles are thus maintained unsullied? No, although some will say that this is the benefit of AS. But it is an orderly and historic system that makes more likely the qualifications of the new bishop.

It originated in the later first century when all manner of evangelists were spreading the Gospel. People wondered which ones knew what they were talking about and which ones were unreliable. It became the case that those who could claim some connection to the Twelve Apostles were thought to be more credible than those who were uncredentialled--not much different from what we do when selecting a doctor, college, or lawyer. Where did they study? Who mentored them? Are they licensed? etc.

Is that what they told you in RCIA class?

No, there were no denominations in those days.

=StarOfSorrow;62324216]Apostolic succession is the method whereby the ministry of the Christian Church is held to be derived from the apostles by a continuous succession, which has usually been associated with a claim that the succession is through a series of bishops. This series was seen originally as that of the bishops of a particular see founded by one or more of the apostles, but it is generally understood today as meaning a series of bishops, regardless of see, each consecrated by other bishops themselves consecrated similarly in a succession going back to the apostles.

Apostolic succession "may also be understood as a continuity in doctrinal teaching from the time of the apostles to the present".
Sincere Thanks,

But how does it apply outside of the catholic and Orthodox church's?

Good question. Some define it exactly as that was written ("...may also be understood as a continuity in doctrinal teaching from the time of the apostles to the present").

Others define it as I explained it earlier.
